Writer, journalist and politician
Himself an immigrant who moved to Barcelona in his early childhood, Candel became a major interpreter and advocate of the immigrants" aspirations to participate fully in Catalan sociocultural life. His best-selling Els altres catalans (The Other Catalans) (1964) was a solid defence of the immigrants" contribution to Catalan society. Although he did not present an overall solution to the issue of "cultural integration", he defended the idea that it was essential for the immigrants to learn Catalan. He was elected Senator for the Entesa dels Catalans coalition (1977–9).
